As the demand for specialized medical tools and devices has surged with advances in technology, so has the demand for the creation of advanced, high-quality coatings for the instruments used by medical professionals. Today, medical device manufacturers offer an array of biocompatible coatings suited for surgical tools and other devices to meet their precise engineering, as well as other clinical and operational needs.

Hydrophilic Coatings

Used to enhance lubrication and reduce surface friction, hydrophilic coating technology employs a loosely cross-linked polymer that absorbs fluid when exposed to water or other liquids. Hydrophilic molecules tend to mix with, dissolve in, or have an affinity for water. These coatings are typically used on devices found in emergency departments and labor and delivery units in hospitals for safe use and optimized patient care due to reduced tissue irritation.

Fluoropolymer Coatings

Fluoropolymer coatings feature a combination of high-performance resins and fluoropolymer lubricants, and these coatings often contain a dry film lubricant. When applied, the product displays a smooth finish that offers excellent resistance to corrosion and chemical interactions. Like hydrophilic coatings, fluoropolymer applications reduce friction, have nonstick surfaces, and are resistant to galling and abrasion. These coatings are typically applied to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) components and various fasteners to help extend their lifespan before a replacement is needed.

Anodic Coatings

Anodic coating materials utilize the anodizing process, which augments thickness and protection for products containing aluminum or other types of substrates. This coating has an oxide film that, when applied to metal, acts as an anode. Although this coating is found naturally on aluminum, its initial thinness leaves it prone to damage, which requires additional applications to accommodate industrial use.
